Ways to Get to know the Sámi

The #Sámi people are the only #Indigenous peoples in #Europe. There are around 80,000 Sámi persons and their traditional territory have been divided up by the borders of #Norway, #Sweden, #Finland, and #Russia. With only slightly less than the #Tayal people in #Taiwan, here are three ways to get to know the Sámi.



The Sámi are the Indigenous people living in the very north of Europe. Their traditional territory is called Sápmi, which was divided by the state borders of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. There are altogether approximately 80,000 Sámi people, consisting of 50,000 in Norway, 20,000 in Sweden, 8,000 in Finland and 2,000 in Russia. Ten regional Sámi languages were spoken, nine of them are still strong.

Here are three easy ways to get you started with familiarizing the Sámi.


1. Watch Sámi movies and listen to Sámi songs

Participating in movie festivals is a great way to get quickly immersed in the current Sámi issues. Due to the pandemic, many events are now virtual and happening online. One of the most iconic events is the International Indigenous #Skábmagovat #film #festival. The festival platform is open between the 29th of January to the 31st of January.
